Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions from the official, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
