EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
