Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
